On Uganda’s Terms is the gripping tale of the author’s experiences as an American nurse during
the vicious and brutal reign of Idi Amin. Ms. Hale tells the story of the struggles she faced while striving to
improve the Ugandan health care system in the 1960s - 70s. Recalling a saying from the Talmud—“If you can save
one life, you can save a generation,” she worked to improve health care in the midst of this African nation’s
most horrific time in history.
Reviews
“I’ve known Mary Hale for over 25 years. She mentored me after returning from 10 years of service in Uganda,
East Africa. I am now a nurse on a busy oncology floor in Philadelphia, Pa. Her experience in East Africa fueled
her dedication and service at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Her book about those years is both
wonderful and exciting, a riveting read.”
Sylvia Jolly RN, Oncology Nurse Specialist,
Jeanes Hospital, Philadelphia, PA
“I have known Mary Hale for 24 years as a pediatric nurse. She was the primary health care professional who
cared for my son over 20 hospitalizations due to his being born with a rare genetic disease. Ms. Hale is the
ultimate professional in nursing care. I was honored to submit her nomination which led to her selection of our
citywide annual award for excellence in nursing. Her love for helping humanity at all levels is apparent in the
care she has given to every child who was under her care. Her compelling story about her work in Uganda during
the most horrific of times shows her total commitment towards making this world a better place.”
